Cyborg immersive sim Core Decay still has those System Shock, Deus Ex vibes in a brand new trailer-

Cyborg espionage game Core Decay has a new trailer out showcasing different approaches to the conundrum of being locked inside one of its sprawling, post-societal-collapse facilities. Our semi-cyber protagonist is faced with escaping a facility, which means traversing a living area to the director’s office to flip a switch. The gameplay trailer showcases violent, social, and stealthy approaches to the goal.

The violent approach has the player gunning down anyone who gets in the way, ambushing poorly armed security guards with a heavy-looking assault rifle and breaking through a security door before shooting out the window of the office to leap inside. The social approach involves finding a friendly employee to give you a keycode to get into a specific room where you can find a key…

Enlisted, the 100-person shooter where everyone has a squad of NPCs, is coming to Steam-

Large-scale shooter Enlisted is coming to Steam this quarter of 2024, bringing its particular flavor of FPS where you’re in charge of a whole squad out from the umbrella of a standalone launcher. The free-to-play game has picked up a following over the years because its approach makes the battles much bigger, but also lets you jump between members of your squad should you lose a soldier, easing the sting of death on big FPS maps.

The newly released Steam version will be called Enlisted: Reinforced, which the makers say is due to “the recent massive changes to the game, and how far the community and Enlisted has come since its initial release.” Indeed, 2023 was a big year for Enlisted, with its latest few updates overhauling almost every aspect of how you progress in-game and play …

Intel quietly launches its speedy Wi-Fi 7 chipsets-

Intel has quietly introduced its first consumer Wi-Fi 7 products; the Wi-Fi 7 BE200 and Wi-Fi 7 BE202. Even though the Wi-Fi standard is yet to be fully ratified by the IEEE until some time in 2024, the first motherboards with the BE200 controller are set to launch very soon, alongside the launch of Intel’s 14th Gen CPUs.

The two adapters have appeared on Intel’s Ark site (via TechPowerUp). The BE200 is listed as being ‘Wi-Fi 7 Pre-certified’. Its maximum speed is listed at 5Gbps, with 2×2 TX/RX streams and support for the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands. For comparison, Intel’s AX211 Wi-Fi 6E controller tops out at 2.4Gbps.

Details regarding the BE202 are limited. No speed is provided and what type of device it will appear in is currently unknown.

The BE200 is set …

If they won’t let Eidos do it, build your own Deus Ex in Shadows of Doubt’s incoming modding update-

Immersive sims are a strange genre. Ultra influential, utterly beloved, but relatively thin on the ground. They’re a delicate instrument: a difficult thing to get right and even when you nail it, certainly nowhere near as lucrative as your live-service whatevers and open-world thingummies. So every time we get a new one—and it’s actually good—it feels like a bit of an event, as was the case when procgen detective sim Shadows of Doubt hit early access in April.

But here’s the good news: It sounds like you’ll be able to use the game’s own tools to gin up your own immersive sims in the relatively near future. Developer ColePowered Games is targeting a December release for Shadows of Doubt’s modding update, and has put out a bit more detail about what, precisely, the new t…

Baldur’s Gate 3’s next patch is going to start rolling out its official mod tools so you can ‘overhaul Baldur’s Gate 3 into the weird nightmare realm of your dreams’-

The big focus of Larian’s post on Baldur’s Gate 3’s upcoming Patch 7 was the game’s expanded evil endings, but the studio also revealed that the first of Baldur’s Gate 3’s official mod tools are coming in this update.

In a conversation with me at this year’s Game Developers Conference, Larian CEO Swen Vincke indicated that the tools won’t be as expansive as Divinity Original Sin 2’s, but rather will “focus on the things we know people want to mod and we’re going to try to make that process easier.”

The Patch 7 preview doesn’t give a full breakdown of the tools, but their scope seems to line up with what Vincke previously indicated. “The next patch will also begin introducing our official modding tools,” the post reads, “letting you change up visuals, animations, sounds…

In this investigation game you’re the desk jockey with all the cool analysis software-

Watch On

You know how in cop shows there’s always that person back at the lab whose job it is to go over evidence, analyze video, read chemical analysis reports—all the nerd stuff? The Operator is a conspiracy thriller about doing that job, helping the people out in the field get cases solved.

Obviously, though, it’s going to go off the rails: You’ll be immediately contacted by a strange hacker known as HAL and tasked with uncovering dark, deeper truths and all that. Very conspiracy thriller investigation stuff, very atmospheric.

It’s a cool premise for one of these games where you’re a mug at a terminal doing the work. Your tools are things like video and photo analysis, databases of people and vehicles to trawl through, chemical analysis, and the like. You’ve e…

Intel’s next-gen CPUs could deliver a 75% increase in L2 cache, which would be big news for gamers-

In a development that will surprise no-one who knows computing history, it has been rumoured Intel’s next-gen desktop CPUs, codenamed Arrow Lake, will contain a whole lot more cache memory. Like, potentially a 75% increase in total L2 cache for the top Arrow Lake CPU. And we’ve seen what a fat wad of cache can do for gaming performance, right?

Since introducing its hybrid core design with Alder Lake Intel has consistently increased the level of cache used, per core, in its processors. That’s exactly where you’d expect it to go when you hit upon the dual limits of power and clock speed, and indeed it’s where the entire industry has gone, too.

AMD has made a name for itself jamming a ton of fast cache memory onto both its processors and GPUs, with the X3D and Infinity Cache te…

Health items and grenades are so much better in Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update-

Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 patch has brought with it sweeping changes to game balance and progression, but the change I’ve appreciated the most since returning to the streets of Night City is how grenades and health consumables now regenerate.

No longer must you toil, disassembling mountains of trash plucked from the still-warm hands of freshly killed gangoons, assembling different tiers of consumable and explosive and inevitably forgetting to assign them to their correct slots before your next big fight.

Instead, consumables and grenades function much the same way weapons do, as you can now assign them to a slot where they’ll recharge over time. The 2.0 update has had a big focus on paring down Cyberpunk 2077’s abundance of junk loot, and health items and grenades are one o…

MrBeast Burger says MrBeast’s a no-good bully who’s ‘elevated greed over his word and the truth’, and it’ll see him in court-

This week brought the news that YouTuber Jimmy ‘MrBeast’ Donaldson has launched legal action against his own brand of burgers, described in the filing as being delivered to customers in a “raw”, “revolting”, and “inedible” state, among many other things. The company behind MrBeast Burger, Virtual Dining Concepts (VDC), has now responded to the suit and accused the star of “bullying tactics” and a “meritless” case.

VDC provided a statement to the Daily Mail, in which it says “the complaint is riddled with false statements and inaccuracies and is a thinly-veiled attempt to distract from Mr. Donaldson’s and Beast Investments’ breaches of the agreements between the parties.”

It describes the suit’s various claims as “false, disparaging statements” and s…

Meta is beginning to wind down support for the original Quest VR headset-

Meta is beginning the process of ramping down support for its original Quest VR headset. In an email to owners, the social media company says that users will not be able to create or join parties, and from March 5, 2023, lose access to Meta Horizon Home features.

The core gaming and app functionality of the Quest remains unaffected, though no new features are coming to the headset. Meta will continue to publish bug fixes and security updates for the headset through the year, TechRadar notes. However, it does appear as though the first-generation headset’s time is coming to an end and users are being pushed towards newer tech.

The Quest won’t have had a particularly long life at the time of its official demise, but it didn’t have long in the spotlight, either. First launched …

Black Friday is still a month away but there are plenty of sweet 1440p gaming monitor deals right now-

The festival of manic materialism that is Black Friday 2023 is still over a month away. But there are some very decent deals right now on 1440p gaming monitors. Indeed, with big-brand 170Hz models available for a penny under $200, it’s unlikely Black Friday with unearth anything dramatically cheaper.

1440p arguably remains the sweetspot for real-world PC gaming. For sure, there are benefits to 4K in terms of razor-sharp visuals. But then there are also downsides, debilitating GPU load being the most obvious. And price. 4K high refresh really costs.

So, what can you expect for your 200 smackers? We’re generally reluctant to recommend rolling the dice on some utterly obscure brand, so you’ll be pleased to hear we’re dealing with a Gigabyte model, the GS27QC, which is just $200…

Cyberpunk 2077’s system requirements are going up ahead of the Phantom Liberty launch, hard drive support is being dropped-

With the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty set to arrive on September 26, CD Projekt is making some changes to the game’s system requirements “to ensure that players have a better understanding of what will be needed” to run the game at an acceptable level of performance. The changes also reflect the evolution of PC gaming hardware in the three years since the original game’s release, including support for new GPU hardware that wasn’t available back then.

“The changes to the minimum requirements are a reflection of our new standard of requirements, which we believe better represent the minimum PC configuration required to run the game at 1080p, while maintaining an average of 30 FPS at low preset,” CD Projekt said. “The reason for making these changes is that updating the r…

Roccat is gone, replaced by Turtle Beach- ‘We felt that time and resources would be best spent focusing under a single brand’-

Roccat is no more. The peripheral brand out of Germany, bought by Turtle Beach in 2019, is being retired and all of its existing product lines will be shifted over to Turtle Beach branding.

“We want to bring a greater level of integration to our family of products across console, PC and simulation,” a statement on the Turtle Beach, formerly Roccat, website says. “We felt that time and resources would be best spent focusing under a single brand and creating a range of products that matter most to gamers.”

First and foremost a PC peripheral brand, Roccat was bought by Turtle Beach for $19.2 million total in 2019. At the time the move was cited by Turtle Beach as a way to expand outside of the company’s existing console consumer base. It was also said at the time that Roccat wa…

Runescape community claims ‘supreme victory’ as developer apologizes and cuts pay-to-win features from hated battle pass-

In the wake of a furious backlash from players, Runescape developer Jagex has admitted that it “messed up” and is making major changes to the recently-announced Hero Pass to remove all the “controversial features” that touched off the uproar.

The announcement of the Hero Pass, a new monetization system that was meant to exist alongside Runescape’s existing subscription fee, did not go over well: Angry messages flew on the official Runescape forums and subreddit, players claimed they’d quit the game and cancelled their accounts, a review bombing campaign was launched on Steam, and a video on the whole mess posted by YouTuber Asmongold attracted more than 1,200 comments.

Jagex initially tried to quell the unrest and ride it out, saying in a September 6 blog post, “We’ve been l…

That game where you farm with your mech finally has a release date-

Something like two and a half years after I first saw the concept and thought “that looks neat” we’re finally gonna get it. We’re finally gonna get a game where you use a mech to plow a field grow and plant some seeds and water them and then harvest a big weird alien fruit.

Videogames, hell yeah.

Following a new trailer earlier his week, Lightyear Frontier developers Frame Break have announced that it’ll release into Early Access in March 2024. First teased quite some time ago, it’s a game about homesteading on an alien world with mechs and up to four players, cooperatively. It’s very exciting, because frankly, that’s a very exciting idea.

The new trailer has the very geared up farmers of the frontier stomping about in their mechs, tossing treats to birds, and otherwis…

Slime Rancher 2’s latest update adds toys and see-saws for your colourful blobs, letting you transform your ranch into a playground for profit-

Watch On

Like a Tabby slime squelching into your chicken coop, Slime Rancher 2 has been steadily working its way through its early access period since it launched in September 2022. This February, developer Monomi Park added 36 new gadgets into its squidgy farming sim, including a constructible Slime pinball machine. Now, its v.0.5.0 update adds yet more gizmos to the game, alongside a whole new way to purchase them: the ProntoMart.

As explained via Steam, the ProntoMart “introduces a brand new shop system to spend all your hard-earned Newbucks”. The ProntoMart kiosk, designed in Slime Rancher’s delightful kawaii style, lets players access two new storefronts. Polestar Provisions sells blueprints needed to craft gadgets, while Coo-Coo corner is a “daily deals” shop that sells gadg…

Steam’s latest big sale has Blasphemous at 75% off, which is enough to make me take the Lord’s name in metroidvania-

In this world, nothing is certain except death, taxes, and Steam rolling out a terrific sale every time I’m trying to save a few pennies. Cue Steam’s Metroidvania Fusion sale, which offers up some terrific deals on some of the best genre mashups around.

There’s up to 75% off on various games, and some of the best deals include Yoku’s Island Express, which sees you play as an insect postman and, if that wasn’t enough, earned a handsome 85% in PCG’s review. There’s also Luna’s Light, which involves a young huntress navigating a hostile post-apocalyptic world. However, the stand-out that caught my eye and made my stomach drop in fear has to be the brutal soulslike Blasphemous, which is currently 75% off at $6/ £5.
